~ An inn that keeps the traditional way-I visited Hoshi Onsen Chojukan

Hoshi Onsen Chojukan is a long-established inn located at the foot of the Mikuni Toge, a border between Gunma and Niigata prefectures, and visited by many writers such as Akiko Yosano and Yasunari Kawabata.
The winding mountain pass from National Route 17 to the 25km longevity hall is a spectacular view.
In particular, when visiting an inn in the evening, the whole area seems to be dark, and it seems that you have lost your way into the Ghibli movie world.
As you approach the foot of the pass, the lights at Chojukan are very fantastic.
This time, I visited a well-established inn, Hoshi Onsen Chojukan, which has a hot spring and rooms with a history.
Please read the entrance from the Chojukan, the hearth, the rooms where celebrities stayed, the hot springs, and the messages from the inns.

What is Hoshi Onsen Chojukan?

The Hoshi Onsen Chojukan is characterized by a wooden building in its entirety. The main building was built in Meiji 8 to preserve the remnants of Hatago during the Edo period. The annex was built in 1938. There is a two-story wooden wooden building, Sozan Kaoru, and the Horyudoden built in 1989. The main building and the annex are designated as registered tangible cultural properties of the country.
In addition, hot springs include Hoshinoyu, which is characterized by a Kanamekan-style building constructed in 1887, Tamakinoyu, which is made of total cypress, and Chojunoyu.
Hoshinoyu and Chojunoyu are hot springs where the source springs from your feet, and it is reported that Kobo Daishi (Kukai) discovered it.

The accommodation fee is between 15,000 yen and 30,000 yen per person, which is a low rate for accommodation.
Drop-in baths and lunch breaks are also available, and you can enjoy a set of Hoshinoyu, Chojunoyu and lunch for 2,600 yen to 5,500 yen.
If you use the benefits of Gunma-chan passport, you can get 2 stamps per night (+1 on weekdays).
In the case of multiple nights, you can get a stamp for the number of nights.
When you get the stamp, please call the hotel and read the special tag plate (QR code).

Chojujukan entrance and hearth

First of all, we will introduce the entrance of the Hoshi Onsen Chojukan and the hearth.

【Entrance】

When you go up from the tapping (= where you take off your shoes), the first thing that jumps into your eyes is the atmospheric entrance.
The book size of Meiji singers such as Kawagogaki Hekitou, large dolls from Takasaki, and New Year decorations are displayed.
First, relax at the entrance. From here, your vacation at Chojukan begins.
By the way, it seems that there are also homemade chairs etc. sent from customers who used it at the entrance.

[Hoshi's hearth]

Chojujukan, on the left side of the entrance, is a touching place.
It's not unusual for customers to gather naturally with the sound of firewood burning slightly “pick!

To the room where many celebrities stayed

Next, I will introduce some rooms at Houshi Onsen Chojukan.

[National Tangible Cultural Properties, Main Building]

The oldest building in the Chojukan built in 1873, a guest room wing designated as a tangible cultural property.
All rooms are without toilets in order to carefully preserve the remnants of the days when many ink artists stayed.

[National Tangible Cultural Properties / Annex]

Built along the Hoshi River in 1945, a guest room wing designated as a tangible cultural property registered in the country.
Some rooms overlook the main building and Hoshinoyu, some overlook the courtyard, and all rooms have toilets.

(Annex 2)

This is the room where actor Hiroshi Abe also stayed for the movie "Thermae Romae".
The trees that grow toward the top of the Mikuni Pass calm and heal just by looking at them.
By the way, employees also like the view from this room the most.

[Kaoru Sanso]

Kazanzanso is a two-story wooden room with a view of the Hoshi River, built in 1978.

(Koruyamaso / 31st)

Kaoruzanso No. 31 is a corner room on the first floor that was also loved by actress Masako Natsume who played an active part in numerous movies and dramas.
What did Natsume think and spend in this room with a clear view of the clear Hoshi River and the view?

(Karunzanso / 34th)

This is the room where the former actress, Saeko Takamine, stayed at the full moon poster.
At that time, transportation was not well-developed and they had to spend 5 hours one way, so they had to stay after shooting.
However, if you imagine that a big actress is staying in the next room where you stayed, you will be thrilled.
I'm very happy just to see the autumn leaves while listening to the water of the Hoshi River.

[Horyuden]

It is a guest room on the second floor of a wooden building that was rebuilt in 1989.
With 8 tatami mats + 4.5 tatami mats + stepping on, 4.5 tatami mats are equipped with a digging kotatsu.

(Horyuden / Yashio)

State of the first floor

State of the second floor

It is a room where Japanese and Western harmony was moderately harmonized, where Prince Victoria of Sweden stayed.
It is quite large, and it is a good size for a family or group.
Many foreigners are staying here, but the rare kotatsu is popular.

Let's relax and enjoy the hot spring!

Speaking of Hoshi Onsen Chojukan, hot spring.
We introduce three hot springs.

[Hoshinoyu]

Hoshinoyu is a mixed bathing bath that was built in the Meiji 28 period.
In recent years, it is a rare natural hot spring, and abundant hot water comes out from the bottom of the bathtub.
At around 40 ° C, it is not hot or cold, so it is attractive to be immersed long and slowly.
It is effective for symptoms such as gastrointestinal, arteriosclerosis, burns, etc.
When you touch the hot water, it is soft and just feels good.
Famous for being used in the JNR era (currently JR) full moon posters and the movie "Thermae Romae", featuring actress Saeko Takamine and Ken Uehara.

Dressing rooms are separated for men and women.

[Longevity hot water]

It is a long-lived hot spring with a cedar-roofed roof that stands quietly along the Hoshi River.
It has also received a full score from the Japan Natural Hot Spring Examination Agency.
This is also a natural spring, similar to Houshi no Yu.
Until now it was exclusively for women, but it is open to men depending on the time of day.

[Tamaginoyu]

Indoor bath

Open-air bath

It is a Tamaki-no-yu that is made entirely of cypress and has a very open feeling.
The source is drawn from a different place and is divided into indoor bath and open-air bath.
When the trees around this open-air bath turn red, it seems that winter is approaching.

Meals & alcohol

Hoshi Onsen Chojukan is full of food and sake.

The food at Chojukan is particular about local ingredients, and steak, sukiyaki, smoked char and other dishes are recommended.

In addition, it is said that the sake reflects the taste of the president who likes sake, or the sake is famous.
We use "Akizuki (Shinagetsu) Junmai Ginjo," which won the gold prize at the National Sake Sake Fair in Gunma Prefecture.

Message to customers

Mr. Kunige Takano, the chief of the Hoshi Onsen Chojukan Bookstore, who cooperated in this interview, gave a message to those who use the Chojukan.

Mr. Takano who is also a hot spring sommelier

"Providing a place where you can enjoy the hot springs and inheriting the hot spring culture from time to time is the teaching of our predecessors, and we are the work of Hoshi Onsen Chojukan.
It may change with each era, but our wish is to keep the tradition and to have our customers enjoy the hot springs purely and sooth the body.
At the Hoshinoyu Chojukan, I would be grateful if you can taste the places such as "Is there a way to enter such a hot spring?" "The old building looked like this."
We are waiting for you who want to enjoy pure hot springs in a style that will never change.
Please come to Hoshi Onsen Chojukan by all means. "

Conclusion

We have reported on the Hoshi Onsen Chojukan.
When I talked to Mr. Takano in charge, I felt the spirit to keep the tradition of this hotel forever, despite the bright tone.
Chojujukan is a hotel where you can enjoy seasonal changes such as fresh green in spring, summer resort, autumn leaves in autumn, and snowy landscape in winter.
It is a place where you can take off the unnecessary things and return to your true self.
It is not as convenient as a city, but you can enjoy inconvenience in this inn.
Why not come and enjoy a true vacation at Hoshi Onsen Chojuchojujukan?
